It’s great that you revisited School of Rock and found Jack Black’s performance entertaining! His character, Dewey, is a lovable yet rebellious musician who really goes all out to rally those talented kids. However, it’s true—Dewey’s antics include some pretty questionable actions that, if viewed through an adult lens, raise a few legal eyebrows!

Throughout the movie, Dewey engages in a series of misdemeanors and felonies, including:

  • Impersonation and deception: He takes over as a substitute teacher under false pretenses, posing as someone else and crossing ethical boundaries.
  • Property damage: The scene where Dewey and the kids sneak into the school involves breaking and entering, which is legally considered trespassing and possibly vandalism.
  • Substance abuse: The depiction of drinking beer at the band practice, although comedic, hints at illegal behavior depending on the characters’ ages.
  • Neglect and endangerment: Dewey’s reckless behavior with the kids—driving them around, encouraging them to skip school, and involving them in illegal activities—could be viewed as neglectful or endangering minors.
  • Kidnapping and confinement: The students skipping school and hiding out with Dewey next to the school could be interpreted as unlawful confinement or false imprisonment.

Of course, these actions are portrayed comically and are part of the film’s humor and rebellion spirit. Still, as adults, we recognize that Dewey’s "rock 'n' roll" lifestyle includes some serious legal moments that wouldn’t hold up in real life.

Despite Dewey’s law-breaking, his passion for music and dedication to encouraging the students’ talent shine through, making him a complex but ultimately lovable character. And as you mentioned, the movie remains a feel-good, music-filled ride that emphasizes the importance of arts in education—a message worth highlighting!

If you want to rewatch or dive into more of Jack Black’s antics, School of Rock is streaming on Hulu here. Just remember, beneath the chaotic exterior is a character who, as much as he's breaking the rules, also inspires others to find their voice!
